Bit9 Certificate Was Used For Signing Malware

Bit9 Certificate Was Used For Signing Malware

The IT-company Bit9, which provides companies in financial, technological and other industries with software, application control and other services, was hacked. The attack resulted in three of its customers’ computers being infected with malware.

Patrick Morley claimed that because of the breach the companys employees couldnt install the production onto several PCs: “Due to an operational oversight within Bit9, we failed to install our own product on a handful of computers within our network. As a result, a malicious third party was able to illegally gain temporary access to one of our digital code-signing certificates that they then used to illegitimately sign malware”.

The companys researchers investigated the breach incident and stated that it wasnt Bit9s product that caused the attack; moreover, it wasnt even compromised. Having verified that all of the products were correctly installed on all of customers computers, the company decided to call off certificate used by attackers.

Bit9 is planning to launch a patch for its software that would automatically discover and avert installation of any program, which illegally use compromised certificate.

According to security experts, this attack was similar to one, experienced by RSAin March 2011, when criminals hijacked information allowing them to break the companys SecurID tokens.
